Purpose of the catalogue

The AXLOE Public Domain Literature Library aims to make carefully curated public-domain texts available with editorial commentary that enhances understanding. It serves readers who value literary context and reliable editions.

Scope and selection

The library includes 100 English-language works selected from Project Gutenberg. Selection favours works with rich thematic potential, varied narrative styles, and historical interest. No single ideology guides inclusion; works were chosen for their editorial value and readability.

Source attribution

All texts are sourced from Project Gutenberg, a volunteer-driven repository of public-domain ebooks. Each record explicitly states this source. The library does not alter the base text; editorial notes are separate.

Bibliographic records

Each entry includes title, author, publisher, keywords, target-reader designation, and a catalogue note. Keywords are drawn from the original Project Gutenberg metadata. The catalogue note is written by AXLOE Catalogue highlight themes, style, and context.

Category assignment

Works are assigned to one of four categories based on dominant themes: Exploration Survival Adventure Tales; Young Readers Enchanted Adventures; Machines Inventions Early Science Fiction; and Historical Psychological Social Fiction. Categories are navigational aids, not definitive literary judgments. Some works could fit multiple categories; assignment reflects editorial judgement.

Editorial reading context

Editorial notes are written using available source material of excerpts, not necessarily entire works. They identify patterns in diction, structure, and imagery that may aid a first reading. Notes do not claim to represent the author's intent or the work's full complexity.

Edition facts and Where source text can be measured reliably, word count and estimated reading time may be provided as reading-scope information.

Recommendations and related works

The category pages recommend three books as starting points. Recommendations are based on thematic relevance, narrative interest, and diversity of author or setting. They are not endorsements or rankings.

Corrections and reader reports

Readers may report errors or suggest improvements via the contact page. AXLOE Catalogue reports periodically but does not guarantee changes. No formal peer review process exists.

Public-domain limitations

Only works confirmed as public domain in the United States are included. Copyright status may differ in other jurisdictions. The library does not provide legal advice; users are responsible for verifying local laws.

Accessibility and readable presentation

HTML pages use semantic tags and avoid inline styles, scripts, or images to ensure broad device compatibility. The design prioritises readability over visual flair.

Independence and editorial responsibility

The library is independently edited. No external advertiser, sponsor, or institution influences selection or commentary. Editorial decisions are made by the catalogue.

What the catalogue does not claim

This catalogue does not claim to be comprehensive, scholarly, or peer reviewed. It does not certify copyright status or provide legal guarantees. Supplementary catalogue material may use automated assistance during drafting or revision and should not be treated as authoritative scholarship. It does not claim that every book was read in full from cover to cover.

Ongoing maintenance

The catalogue is updated periodically as new works are added or existing records revised. No release schedule is promised.

Bibliographic dates and catalogue measurements

The catalogue distinguishes the Project Gutenberg digital release from a work’s original or first publication. Project Gutenberg is identified as the digital source for the edition available here; its release year is therefore shown as Gutenberg Release Year, not as the work’s original publication year.

When an explicit first-publication or issue date can be supported directly by the title or issue information, it may be shown separately as First Publication Year. When that date cannot be confirmed, the catalogue displays Not confirmed rather than guessing a year.

Where the source text can be measured reliably, the catalogue may provide word count and estimated reading time. These measurements describe reading scope and are not quality rankings.
