Using the Library Tools

Finding, Comparing, and Tracking Your Reading

The AXLOE Public Domain Literature Library holds one hundred books, spread across four categories that range from Historical Psychological Social Fiction to Machines Inventions Early Science Fiction. With that many titles, the challenge is not scarcity but selection: where to begin, how to tell similar books apart, and how to pace a long work once you have committed to it.

Three tools work together to answer those questions. Book Finder narrows the catalog by the qualities you care about, Compare Books sets two or three candidates side by side, and Reading Tracker turns a chosen book into a page-by-page plan. None of them rate literary merit; they simply make the collection easier to navigate, so you can spend less time guessing and more time reading.

Start with Book Finder, Then Compare

Book Finder is the natural entry point because it lets you filter by category, length, reading time, chapter rhythm, sentence flow, and subject. For instance, if you are drawn to historical fiction set in Chicago, the subject filter will surface Barriers Burned Away — Context and Discussion, which is tagged with the Great Fire of 1871. You can then refine by estimated reading time to see whether its 638 minutes fit your schedule.

Once Finder returns a shortlist, Compare Books is the next step. It places two or three titles side by side, showing word count, reading time, text sections, sentence flow, and subjects. This is where you notice that one book's chapter rhythm may be high while another's sentence flow is low, helping you predict which reading experience will feel more comfortable.

Use Compare to Distinguish Similar Books

The catalog has 48 books in Historical Psychological Social Fiction, so many titles share subjects like England -- Fiction or Domestic fiction. Compare Books is especially useful here. For example, you might be torn between two Victorian novels with similar subject tags. The tool reveals that one has a word count of 80,325 and an average sentence length of 20.1 words, while the other runs 146,538 words with sentences averaging 17.9 words. That difference in sentence flow can affect how quickly you read, even if the subject matter is alike.

Compare also shows text sections, which hint at how a book is divided. A title with 15 sections may offer natural stopping points, while one with only 7 might require you to plan your own pauses. These are not quality judgments; they are practical details that shape your reading experience.

Plan Your Pace with Reading Tracker

After you select a book, Reading Tracker helps you sustain momentum. It records progress in pages, not sections or minutes, so you set a daily page goal and see your estimated finish date. For a long novel like Barriers Burned Away, which is about 146,538 words, the tracker estimates a total page count based on 250 words per page. At the default goal of 20 pages a day, you can calculate roughly how many days that will take.

The tracker also lets you adjust the total page count to match your own edition, and it stores your history in the browser without requiring an account. That means you can pick up where you left off across sessions, as long as you use the same device. Together, the three tools form a workflow: find, compare, track.
